For generations, Mossbrae Falls has been one of Northern California’s most breathtaking hidden treasures. Tucked beneath a lush canopy just outside Dunsmuir, its hundreds of springs pour directly from the volcanic cliffs into the Sacramento River, creating one of the most unique waterfalls in California.
For decades, there was one major problem: there was never a legal way to get there.
The only route required walking along active Union Pacific railroad tracks. Thousands of visitors made the journey anyway, technically trespassing and risking their safety just to experience the falls. Mossbrae became famous not only for its incredible beauty, but also for the dangerous and controversial path visitors had to take.
Now, after years of collaboration and persistence, there’s finally exciting news. The City of Dunsmuir has reached a landmark agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to allow construction of a legal public access trail. The proposed trail will extend from the existing Hedge Creek Falls Trail and include a pedestrian bridge over the Sacramento River, creating a safe and legal way for everyone to experience this natural wonder.
While the trail is still being funded and constructed, this agreement is a historic milestone for Dunsmuir and the countless people who have dreamed of seeing Mossbrae Falls without risking their safety. It represents years of dedication by community members, local leaders, and partners working together to protect both visitors and this extraordinary landscape.
We can’t wait to celebrate the day the trail officially opens. Until then, please help preserve this special place by respecting the railroad closures and following project updates. The future of Mossbrae Falls has never looked brighter.
