😻Kitten Season is HERE and Cat Care Durango needs your help.😻

Since March 22nd alone, we have taken in 47 kittens. Only 4 litters came with their mamas — the rest were abandoned or orphaned, most likely born to strays in our community.

While these babies are tiny and adorable, the reality behind the scenes is overwhelming. We have unfortunately had to say no to intakes — either because our intake rooms are completely full, or because we don’t have fosters available who can care for the tiniest babies who need to be bottle fed every few hours around the clock.

Without a mama cat, WE become their moms — bottle feeding, monitoring their health, keeping them warm, and making sure they get the nutrition they need through KMR milk replacer and high-nutrient kitten foods.

Many orphaned kittens also require constant supervision to prevent serious medical issues that can occur when they begin nursing on each other for comfort.

One thing many people don’t realize: it’s critically important to keep kittens and litters separated during this fragile window before they are vaccinated and their immune systems are stronger. This is a big part of why space is so limited — it’s not just square footage, it’s safe, isolated space for each group.

Kitten season takes an enormous emotional and financial toll on our small rescue, but these babies are worth every sleepless night. 💙

Here’s how YOU can help Cat Care Durango right now:
🍼 Foster — especially if you can bottle feed
🏠 Open your home to a litter with or without a mom
💰 Donate to help cover KMR, vet care, and supplies
📣 Share this post so more people in Durango know we need support

If you’re interested in fostering or want to help, please reach out to us directly. Thank you for helping us give these tiny lives a fighting chance. 🐾

Meet McGregor and Seersha! 🐈‍⬛🖤
These two are still searching for their forever family! McGregor and Seersha are the proud parents of the four sweet black kittens who have already found homes of their own. Now it’s mom and dad’s turn. ✨
Both would make wonderful indoor/outdoor companions who love attention, adventure, and staying busy. Seersha would especially thrive somewhere she can put her little huntress skills to work, while McGregor would love being the king of his castle with all the attention on him. 😅
While they can go home together, we think they may each be happiest in homes where they can truly shine as the center of attention. McGregor especially prefers the single-cat lifestyle, and Seersha is independent enough to happily rule her own home too. 🖤
At around a year old, these two are full of personality, love, and s***k. If you’ve been looking for a sweet black cat (or maybe two!), McGregor and Seersha just might steal your heart.

🐾💚 Meet Axel 💚🐾

Axel is a total lovebug who will absolutely melt in your arms. At around a year old, all he wants is to find his person (or people) to shower with affection.

He came to us from an outdoor situation in Cortez after surviving a raccoon attack and despite it all, he is incredibly sweet and trusting with people.

Axel thrives on human connection. While he’s slowly being introduced to other cats, we believe he would do best in a home where he can have space, attention, and a safe indoor/outdoor setup to match his comfort level.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who just wants to be by your side, Axel is your guy. 🐱💚

If he sounds like the perfect fit, fill out our application here: catcaredurango.org/adopt

💛 Java Update 💛
Our girl Java has been busy making BIG progress!

About a month ago, she had her spay surgery, and while she was there, the vet took tissue samples from a few areas to have biopsies done to help us finally get some answers. And we did… Java has been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disorder.

While it’s not the easiest diagnosis, we are so relieved to finally have direction for her care.

Java is now on a strict gastrointestinal diet and has been on prednisone for the past 2 weeks and we’re happy to share that she’s already showing improvement! 🎉

The plan is to keep her on this path a little longer and (fingers crossed 🤞) give her gut the chance to rest, heal, and reset.

Through it all, Java continues to be her sweet, loving, playful self and we couldn’t be more proud of how far she’s come. 💕

Thank you to everyone who has supported her journey. We’re feeling hopeful for this next chapter! 🐾💛

Kitten season is here 🐾
Most of our kittens aren’t quite ready yet, but we do have 3 adorable black kittens available now! 🖤
All adoptions start with an application at catcaredurango.org/adopt. You’re always welcome to come meet the cats, but we do not offer same-day adoptions—please allow 24–48 hours for your application to be reviewed and approved before bringing a kitty home.
Important reminder: if you find a litter of kittens alone, the mother is often nearby. She may be out finding food or staying hidden to protect them. In most cases, the best thing you can do is observe from a distance and wait for her to return before intervening.

Keeping kittens with their mom whenever possible gives them the best chance to thrive 💛

A huge thank you to the amazing couple who welcomed him into their home and gave him the chance to thrive. We LOVE to see our kitties not just adopted, but flourishing in their new lives.

We are so incredibly grateful to all of our adopters who open their hearts and homes and who share these beautiful updates with us. Getting to watch our cats grow into their happiest selves with their new families is the best part of what we do.

🌺🐾 Two Years Later 🐾🌺

Two years ago, Cat Care Durango traveled to Maui to help rescue 12 cats displaced by the Lahaina fires — an experience that changed us forever.

From time spent at the Lanai Cat Sanctuary, to learning from Maui Humane Society, to connecting with Cat Café Maui, we were surrounded by compassion, innovation, and a shared mission to do better for cats.

Today, 8 of those cats are in loving homes, 2 are still with us, and 2 have since crossed the rainbow bridge — each one leaving a lasting mark on our hearts.

This trip was unforgettable, humbling, and deeply inspiring. Witnessing the impact of the fires and the strength of the animals and community was incredible to witness. The connections we made and the things we learned have helped guide the future of Cat Care Durango every single day.

We carry Maui with us in all that we do. And we’re just getting started. 💚🐱

Thank you for all the work you do to help these sweet kitties 😻
