Can you believe we are 43 days from 2026 and celebrating 250 years of our Nation and North Carolina's history?
My African American History of Washington Tours and Presentations will host some awesome events in 2026 at local churches, schools, book clubs, libraries, the Historic Turnage Theater and other historic venues here in Washington, Beaufort County and across the state. I will get you off to a great start with my 'KNOW YOUR TOWN SERIES' where you'll learn about Washington's African American History it has taken me 25 years to uncover.
Here's a little bite of that history. This is the Hiram Masonic on the corner of Fifth and Respess Streets. The Lodge's Minister and Lodge Brother, Jarvis M. Williams (born 1828-1894.) was a prominent baker here in Washington. He owned his own Bakery and Grocery Store at the corner of Market and Water Streets form 1840-1889. The bakery was very prosperous. He even baked for the Union Army while they were encamped in Washington during the Civil War with their five forts around Washington.
Mr. Williams was one of four men, (Abraham Galloway of New Bern was one of the men) from eastern NC that went to the White House in 1864 and met with President Abraham Lincoln to thank him for signing the Emancipation Proclamation.
2026 will find us celebrating Washington's African American History all 365 days and we're just getting started!
My 'KNOW YOUR TOWN SERIES will be featured in the Washington Daily News, here on this history page and on youtube! I will keep you updated on the historic markers I am getting to honor Mr. Jarvis Williams.
