the last ten minutes are as follows:
minute one: Jason Walsmith & i ( Emma Walsmith ) walk up to our one month old calf, Leroy, who has yet to have an occasion where he has to be handled by hoomans. because we can see he has a wound on his ear, i attempt to grab him, he kicks me in the arm (comically loud, but probably not going to have to amputate).
minute two: i follow him into denser woods, jason comments that he should’ve brought his lasso. Leroy skedattles across the lane back toward the adult cattle where i catch up to him, grab his neck, have a hold of him when he says “moo!” at which point, i let go because his mom and weird uncle seem a little too concerned for comfort. *that being said, his mom remained calm and i feel was quick to recognize we were offering help. weird uncle (big thunder), is our unpredictable steer so when he gets in the mix, i bail - always.*
minute three-seven: jason goes to get his lasso, even though i comment that i don’t think he can rope him successfully where he is and the easier way would be to just grab him outside of the presence of big thunder. i wait for jason’s return and in the meantime, all three calves gravitate toward me.
minute eight: jason returns, i pressure Leroy to walk back toward him (lasso in hand) and wouldn’t ya know it, he successfully ropes him! landing the lasso right behind Leroy’s ears.
minute nine: Leroy remains pretty chill while i clean the wound on his ear, apply an antimicrobial spray and then a salve that will hopefully keep flies away. his mom, Lily, stands nearby but remains perfectly calm.
minute ten: we let Leroy go and he returns to Lily. jason comments, “man i wish YouTube was here to capture all that.” 😂
we’re in our cowboy & cowgirl era. someone get YouTube on the phone. 🤠
