We worked with students from Beaver Local School District this past week to plant trees in the picnic areas of Beaver Creek State Park as part of Make a Difference Day. Students learned how to properly plant both potted trees and tree seedlings received from the Division of Forestry’s state nursery. Students also worked on potting some of our tree seedlings into larger pots so we can care for them until they get a little larger to plant in the park. We still have plenty more trees to add but, this week we got 12 trees planted into the ground at Beaver Creek, all within the Scenic River corridor.

🚨 Safety Update for Guilford Lake 🚨

Due to the continued lowering of Guilford Lake in preparation for upcoming dam renovations, the ice on the lake should be considered extremely hazardous as water levels drop. With rapidly changing water levels, all ice should be considered unsafe and avoided for the remainder of the drawdown.

Your safety comes first—please stay off the ice and help spread the word. Thank you for understanding and staying safe out there.

🐿️ We're NUTS about SQUIRRELS 🌰
⏬ Read on for FIVE FUN FACTS in celebration of Squirrel Appreciation Day 🤯
1️⃣ Burrowing mammals like the thirteen-lined ground squirrels create warrens of tunnels that may be used by other animal species, including foxes, small rodents, snakes, crayfish, and various insects.
2️⃣ Squirrels are hoarders of acorns, hickory nuts, beechnuts and many other species of plant fruit. They lose plenty of seeds in the process, and thus are important in spreading plant populations.
3️⃣ Young squirrels are reared in leaf nests, dens, and occasionally bird houses.
4️⃣ Squirrels usually breed twice a year; in winter and in summer.
5️⃣ Squirrels use two types of nests: leaf and den. Leaf nests are located in the crotches of tree branches and dens are formed in hollow tree trunks or branches. A leaf nest is known as a dray.
