Before I share the numbers, I just want to say thank you for being here. I try to keep this page happy and upbeat because I know life can be hard, and I want this to be a place where we can celebrate, learn about, and appreciate St. George Island’s oldest visitors—our sea turtles.

But nature doesn’t always give us happy news.

We are still surveying the beach, cleaning up after the storm, and remarking nests that were impacted, so these numbers may change over the next few days as we continue our evaluations.

🐢 Current 2026 Season Update
• 351 total nests
🐢 344 Loggerhead nests
💚 7 Green turtle nests
🌊 142 nests washed out
💧 72 nests inundated with standing water for 3 days, and now some of them covered in 2-3 feet of wet sand.
9 nests have hatched

Now for the silver lining… 💚

Despite everything Tropical Storm Bertha threw at us, our incredible mama turtles haven’t given up. In the last 48 hours, we’ve welcomed 10 brand-new nests! That gives us hope that this season is far from over.

Now, more than ever, we need your help. Every hatchling that survives has to make it to the water. Please remember to:
🏖️ Fill in your holes before you leave the beach.
🏰 Knock down your sandcastles.
🌙 Close your blinds after dark.
💡 Turn off exterior lights.

These simple actions can make the difference between a hatchling safely reaching the Gulf or becoming disoriented and vulnerable to predators.

Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement, and support. Every kind message, every shared post, every darkened beachfront, and every piece of trash picked up helps us give these amazing tiny hatchlings the best chance possible.

No matter what challenges come our way, we’ll keep walking this beach every morning for the turtles. 💚🐢
