Just south of a small East Texas railroad town, thousands of acres of woods, ponds, and river bottomland are waiting, and a lot of Texans have never heard of them. 🌲

The Mineola Nature Preserve stretches along the Sabine River in Wood County, a mix of pine and hardwood forest, open meadows, wetlands, and stocked fishing ponds. Miles of trails wind through it for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, and a network of boardwalks and bird blinds makes it a quiet favorite for birders and photographers. 🦅

Go early in the morning, when mist hangs low over the ponds and herons work the shallows. Bring a rod if you like to fish, pack bug spray for the bottomland, and check the preserve's page for current hours and trail conditions, especially after heavy rain when the river rises. Afterward, head into downtown Mineola for lunch and a look at the historic depot. 🎣
