In Lubec, Maine you can stop by the Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant for fresh seafood served right along the water in one of the most unusual settings in town. Lobster, scallops, crab, and other seafood are brought in from local fishermen, and you can enjoy your meal while looking across Johnson Bay. The restaurant is part of The Inn on the Wharf, which was created from a former sardine factory that finally closed in 2001 after decades of operation. At one point during the mid-1900s, Lubec had more than 20 sardine processing plants. Every table has a water view, and the outdoor deck puts you right above the bay where you may spot seals, seabirds, and other marine life. Lubec is also the easternmost town in the contiguous United States, adding another reason to explore the area. The restaurant operates seasonally from May through October, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can also stay overnight at the waterfront inn, with whale-watching, kayak, and bike outings offered from the property.

🌊 There is a Maine village where nobody has ever driven a car to the store, because there is no road to drive it on.

Monhegan sits twelve miles out in the open Atlantic off the midcoast, a granite ridge less than two miles long. The mail boat comes over from Port Clyde or New Harbor and that is the whole connection to the mainland. Freight moves up from the wharf on wooden hand carts with bicycle wheels, which is exactly as slow and as charming as it sounds. Roughly sixty people stay through the winter. In summer the population multiplies several times over and then drains back out again by Columbus Day.

The eastern side of the island is the part that stops people. The land climbs and then simply ends in headland cliffs at Whitehead and Blackhead that drop about 150 feet straight into the Atlantic, with seventeen miles of trail threading through spruce woods and wildflower meadows to get you there. Artists have been coming since the 1850s. Rockwell Kent lived here. Edward Hopper painted here. The Wyeths kept a house here.

The lobster fleet does not run on a normal calendar either. Monhegan sets its own trap season and opens it in the dead of winter, when almost nobody else on the coast is hauling. 🦞 It is the kind of place where the ferry schedule is the only clock that matters and the general store closes when it closes.
