Miami String Haus is located inside a storybook El Portal cottage directly across from one of Miami-Dade’s few surviving Indigenous burial mounds.

The Miami Herald recently shared the history of this special place and photographed Miami String Haus founder Charles Winters at the mound across from his workshop.

J.T.L. “Compagnon” Cello

Founded in 1861 in Mirecourt, France, Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L.) became one of France’s most prominent string instrument manufacturers. Known for blending traditional French craftsmanship with large-scale production, J.T.L. produced instruments that continue to be appreciated by musicians today.

Among its notable models was the Compagnon, a cello recognized for its traditional French design, craftsmanship, and rich tonal character.

This particular cello has a history of its own. Having undergone some restoration throughout its lifetime, it stands as a testament to the resilience of fine instruments and the importance of skilled craftsmanship in preserving them.

Despite its age and the repairs it has endured, this cello continues to produce an incredibly rich, warm, and resonant sound.

That missing upper edge corner chunk didn’t want to cooperate, but little by little the repair is disappearing back into the instrument where it belongs. First photo: ‘well… that’s unfortunate.’ Second photo: ‘what corner repair?’

Good restoration shouldn’t scream for attention. It should quietly erase the evidence.
