The Rabbits; Pumpkin Spice, Freckles & Marshmallow, at Rim Rocks Dogwood Cabins have officially had yet another habitat upgrade. At this point I think they’ve had more home renovations than most people.

But we’re hoping this one might finally be their permanent setup. The goal is to create a space where guests can actually step inside, pet them, and enjoy a little more animal interaction. Eventually we may rotate other friendly animals through the area and turn it into a small petting space so guests can spend time with some of our farm crew up close.

We’re always trying to make little improvements around the property to make the experience even better for everyone who visits — especially when it comes to the animals. They’re a big part of what makes this place special.

Now the one thing we do NOT want more interaction with this year… ticks.

I’ve already had my first one of the season, so consider this your friendly Rim Rocks Dogwood Cabins reminder: when you come hiking, exploring, or hanging out with the animals, don’t forget to frontline yourself. Nature is amazing… but ticks did not get the memo.

Scout may limp, but don’t let that fool you… he’s still very serious about his job.

We had hay being delivered, which always gets Duke a little too excited. In the middle of the chaos he kept trying to take over the process and ended up kind of cornering me between the hay and the truck.

Before I could even think twice, here comes Scout — limp and all — marching right into the middle of it like, “Absolutely not. Nobody messes with my mom.”

He put himself right between me and Duke to distract him and settle things down. No hesitation, no second guessing… just pure loyalty.

People always talk about livestock guardian dogs protecting animals, but sometimes they decide their human needs guarding too.

I may run this farm, but apparently Scout has appointed himself Head of Security. And honestly… I’m pretty okay with that.

Every time I walk through the forests and rock formations of the Shawnee National Forest, I’m reminded that we are only the newest chapter in a very long story.

Long before cabins, roads, and hiking trails, people lived here, traveled through here, and left pieces of their lives behind in these cliffs and rock shelters. The markings, carvings, and traces on the rock walls are quiet reminders that generations stood in these same places centuries ago.

It’s humbling to live and work in a place with this much history. These hills and stone walls have witnessed thousands of years of human stories, and every time I see those markings I’m reminded that we’re simply caretakers of something much bigger than ourselves.

Today I experienced something I will never forget. An American Eagle flew across our property at Rim Rocks Dogwood Cabins — only about 20 feet above my head. It was one of those moments that makes you stop breathing for a second. Powerful. Peaceful. Completely awe-inspiring.

Living here in the Shawnee National Forest reminds me every day how blessed we are — not just with beautiful land, but with the freedom and wildlife that make this country so incredible. To be honored with the presence of an American Eagle felt deeply symbolic and honestly emotional.

The photos don’t even come close to doing it justice. I didn’t look at my camera as much as I probably should have because I just wanted to be present in the moment. I did zoom in on a couple of the Live Photos, and if you look closely you can catch a glimpse of those wings moving through the trees.

Some days nature gives you a quiet reminder of why you chose this life. Today was one of those days.

Bears Den unexpectedly became available and it is officially the final cabin left. Whoever books it will also be here during our Second Annual Wine Tasting this weekend. Last year we had about 25 guests gather together, share wines, and discover flavors none of us had tried before, and it turned into one of our favorite nights on the property, so we decided to do it again.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way… the temperatures are finally agreeing with us, and winter in the Shawnee is absolutely showing off. Welp… somebody got into a little rooster drama out in the yard. Bumble picked a fight (or found one), and now he’s not only in timeout… he’s in his walker so his leg can heal AND his little crop can heal too. He got picked on, it was cold outside, and this mama isn’t letting him tough-guy his way through recovery.

So for now, Bumble gets the VIP treatment: inside the house, warm and cozy, hanging out with his mama and the baby chicks… who are doing great, by the way… even if they’re taking up approximately 97% of my available space and 110% of my energy. 😂

It’s a lot of room. A lot of work. A lot of cleaning. But it’s all worth it—because if this makes Bumble stronger, then we’re doing it right. 💛
