Only three historic fire towers still stand in their original spots in the Monongahela National Forest—Bickle K**b is one of them, a former wildfire lookout turned 360° viewing platform over reclaimed forest, river valleys, and blue ridgelines near Elkins.
Once the first line of defense against wildfire, these towers watched for smoke before planes and satellites took over. Today, Bickle K**b feels like a living museum—with sunrise and sunset that light up layered peaks, and dark skies perfect for stargazing on clear nights.
Know before you go:
- Access via gravel Forest Road 91; the final stretch is narrow and rough—drive slowly and check conditions.
- Expect wind on the platform; bring layers and a headlamp for early/late visits.
- Practice Leave No Trace and respect this protected historic structure—please don’t remove artifacts.
