Headed to the 88th Mountain State Forest Festival (Sept 26–Oct 4)? Your fall week in Elkins starts here!

Expect parades and pageantry—the Grand Feature Parade, Fireman’s Parade, and Parade of Children—plus the Royal Coronation of Maid Silvia L###VIII on Fri, Oct 2 at 2 pm at the Citizens Bank of WV Outdoor Amphitheater at Davis & Elkins College.

Add live music, a carnival, 10K/5K, Highland Dance, Irish Road Bowling, and a lumberjack contest for a full slate of “Autumn in Color.”

Built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps—the first fire tower in the Monongahela National Forest—this 35-foot, open-air platform atop 4,004-foot Bickle K**b serves up sweeping vistas toward Otter Creek Wilderness and the Allegheny ridges. Family-friendly, short, and unforgettable on clear days. Typically a three-season stop; winter access isn’t plowed.

Getting there: Forest Road 91 (Stuart Memorial Drive), gravel with a single-lane stretch—take it slow and yield to oncoming cars. Small parking area; easy gravel path to the tower.
