These cottages are beyond our wildest dreams.

Five years ago, we began searching for a place of our own in Door County. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we never imagined it would take more than a year and multiple failed offers. I’ll never forget the moment we received the news that our offer had been accepted. By then, we were exhausted, discouraged, and honestly on the verge of giving up.

We purchased The Birch sight unseen, with no contingencies in place—a leap of faith that felt equal parts exciting and terrifying. Thankfully, it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. That leap eventually led us to the neighboring cottages, The Cedar and The Spruce.

The Cedar needed some love, but the updates were mostly cosmetic. The Spruce was a completely different story. It had no kitchen, no bathroom, no floors, a rotting deck/siding, and years of cleanup waiting both inside and out. There were plenty of moments when the project felt overwhelming, but we kept moving forward one step at a time.

Now, standing on the other side of it all, it feels a little surreal. What started as a dream of owning one small cottage has grown into something so much bigger than we ever imagined. These cottages have given our family countless memories, introduced us to incredible guests, and taught us that sometimes the biggest risks lead to the most rewarding adventures. We’re incredibly grateful for this journey and excited to see what the next five years bring. ✨

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time alone lately. Not necessarily because I planned to, but because life has required it—dividing and conquering, balancing schedules, and raising teenagers who now have social calendars of their own.

I’ve always considered myself an independent woman, something that is often seen as wild. But after sharing a life with the same person for more than 20 years, having a built-in companion for almost everything is the norm. Cohabitation is comfortable.

What I’ve discovered in this unexpected season of solo time has been kind of nice. I can set my own schedule, eat what I want, only clean up after myself, and enjoy the quiet. It has also forced me to do things that I might normally ask Joe Leschisin to do. If I want something done - I have to figure it out on my own.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or craving a little breathing room, I highly encourage you to carve out some time for yourself. Take a solo trip if you can. If that’s not possible, go out to dinner alone, take a hike, grab a coffee, visit a bookstore, or spend an afternoon doing something just for you. There’s something surprisingly refreshing about being comfortable with yourself!

Same people. Same dock. Same sunset. So. Much. Growth.

This photo was taken just after we bought The Birch and spent Memorial Day weekend renovating and getting her ready for guests. The kids were all in. They painted the porch, the walls, and even the kitchen cabinets. They made the original sign that hung on the anchor, and they were still young enough that a trip to Uncle Tom’s Candy Store counted as excellent bribery.

It feels like yesterday, yet somehow also a lifetime ago.

Since then, so much has changed. This year, Ella turns 18 and begins her final year of high school. Will is leaving middle school behind.

Looking back at this photo reminds me how quickly these years pass and how much beauty can be found in the ordinary moments we never realize are the “good old days” until they’re gone.

If anyone has figured out how to slow down time or truly master living in the moment, I’m all ears.
