Beautiful fall colors line the Echo Trail right now, twenty miles from Ely to Big Lake with the road half paved and half gravel.

The colors are turning along the Echo Trail, and the maple beside the cabins has gone to a deep red that stops people on their way to the beach.

If you are driving up this fall, take your time on the road north of Ely and let the drive become part of the trip instead of the thing between you and the lake.

The road in is lined with aspen, pine and maple, and it rewards anyone who slows down long enough to look out the window.

Fall has always been a good season for reflection, on what this year has been and on what is still ahead for all of us on Big Lake.

A walk through Timberwolf, one of the most requested cabins on Big Lake. September 27th through October 3rd opened up, right on the beach with the water about twenty feet from the back deck.

Vaulted ceilings, a glass front wood stove, and a screened porch that catches the sunset over the water. Three bedrooms sleep up to eight, and the timing lines up with prime leaf changing season along the shoreline.

Timberwolf just opened up for September 27th through October 3rd, and that almost never happens!

This is one of the most requested cabins on the property, sitting right on the beach with the water about twenty feet from the back deck. Most seasons it books from opening weekend straight through to close, so a week like this rarely comes available.

You’d be catching it at prime leaf changing season too, when the shoreline around Big Lake turns gold and red and the mornings get that first cold snap crispness. The screened porch faces the water and catches one of the best sunset views on the lake. Inside you get three bedrooms sleeping up to eight, an open living and dining area with a glass front wood stove, and a full kitchen.

Fire bans across our area were lifted on August 24, and we reopened here at the lodge on August 22. The past ten days have brought back the quiet mornings and full docks this place is built for.

Kids are back on the beach, walleye are back on the line, and guests keep telling us how good it feels to be on the water again. September on Big Lake is shaping up to be some of the best fishing and weather of the whole year, with cooler mornings and far fewer bugs than midsummer.

None of this happens without the crews who worked around Big Lake this summer protecting homes and cabins across the area. We are grateful for every one of them.
