Fire bans across our area were lifted on August 24, and we reopened here at the lodge on August 22. The past ten days have brought back the quiet mornings and full docks this place is built for.

Kids are back on the beach, walleye are back on the line, and guests keep telling us how good it feels to be on the water again. September on Big Lake is shaping up to be some of the best fishing and weather of the whole year, with cooler mornings and far fewer bugs than midsummer.

None of this happens without the crews who worked around Big Lake this summer protecting homes and cabins across the area. We are grateful for every one of them.

Four weeks from now, most calendars are wide open. That is a good stretch to spend on Big Lake.

The walleye bite picks up as the water cools through fall, and the lake goes quiet once the summer crowds head home. Cool mornings on calm water, a warm sauna to thaw out after.

A weekly update from Dan just came in!

Rain hit the Pines today, a real soaking rain, the first one we have had in over a month. It fell so well timed we joked it should get a paid acting credit. No lightning with it, so our fire crews kept right on working through a calmer day on the ground.

Today is August 15, the date we had originally hoped to reopen. We were not able to make that happen, but after working with the Forest Service we now have a plan. We will welcome guests back starting August 22 with a soft opening, five cabins ready for guests alongside the fire staff still housed on site.

Thank you for the patience these past weeks. Reach out with any reservation questions in the meantime.

Here is hoping for more rain before the 22nd. We will see you at the Pines.

As the fire crews wind down their work in the Ely area, Dan Houle and Pennsylvania Hotshot Samuel Scott share one last goodbye at the Angleworm Trailhead. Scott’s crew spent countless hours digging fireline on the Bear Trap Fire, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Northwoods.
