There's a moment every August when the beach quietly empties out. School starts, the July crowd heads home, and Emerald Isle goes back to feeling like Emerald Isle.
The water is still warm. The evenings are still long. And the walk from our deck to the sand is exactly as short as it was three weeks ago.
If you've got flexibility in the last stretch of August, take it. Late-summer weeks are some of the best of the whole year here, and they're the ones people forget to book.
