Klepzig Mill was not built beside Rocky Creek for the view. It was built there for the power. ⚙ In 1928, Walter Klepzig constructed this small turbine mill directly along the creek in the Missouri Ozarks.

The mill sits beside a rocky shut-in where the water is naturally squeezed through resistant volcanic rock. That flow could turn the turbine and operate the machinery inside. Klepzig was known locally as an innovator, bringing new fencing and improved dairy cattle into the neighborhood as well.

The building survives today inside Ozark National Scenic Riverways, still pressed close to the same creek that made it useful. There is something satisfying about seeing an old machine site where the geography explains exactly why it exists.

There is history all along the river in the Ozarks!

I floated by these old railroad ties from an old tram line along the Jacks Fork River in Eminence. Long before this area became the Riverways we know today, this place was the epicenter of a massive logging boom.

When the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company moved its headquarters to West Eminence back in 1910, they built out an entire network of these tram roads and rail lines to haul shortleaf pine and oak out of the hollows and straight to the mills.

The scale of it was wild, but it came at a massive cost to the land. The clear-cutting back then was completely ruthless—they stripped the hillsides bare. Without the trees, the topsoil washed right into the rivers. Then people thought burning off the land would help and it only made the soils and conditions worse. Also, wildlife was pushed to the absolute brink.

Finding things like these old rotting ties along the river is just a wild reminder of how much this landscape went through before the mills finally shut down for good around 1919, but the Ozarks are resilient, just like the people.
