Klepzig Mill was not built beside Rocky Creek for the view. It was built there for the power. ⚙ In 1928, Walter Klepzig constructed this small turbine mill directly along the creek in the Missouri Ozarks.

The mill sits beside a rocky shut-in where the water is naturally squeezed through resistant volcanic rock. That flow could turn the turbine and operate the machinery inside. Klepzig was known locally as an innovator, bringing new fencing and improved dairy cattle into the neighborhood as well.

The building survives today inside Ozark National Scenic Riverways, still pressed close to the same creek that made it useful. There is something satisfying about seeing an old machine site where the geography explains exactly why it exists.

Trail riders really are a different breed.

The guide says, “It’s just a little steep,” and suddenly everybody’s leaning forward in the saddle like we’re entering the gates of Mordor.

Meanwhile the horse is calm, the rider is pretending to be calm, and nobody wants to be the first person to admit this trail was apparently built by mountain goats with unresolved anger issues.

And somehow… this is still the part we love most.

Not the arena.
Not the perfect footing.
Not the ribbons.

The moments where your horse picks its way through something sketchy, your heart rate doubles, and both of you come out the other side feeling just a little tougher.

Trail riders will really risk their entire emotional stability for a good view and a horse they trust.

And honestly?

Worth it.

Here is a historic image of the iconic Alley Mill in the early 1900s, before it was repainted in its legendary red color. We are told that in the early 1930s, the white paint on the mill was beginning to look weathered, so Missouri State Parks sent employees out to look for new paint for the mill. Bulk paint was hard to find in Shannon County during the Great Depression, and there were very few options. The cheapest paint in the largest quantity that the men could find was red paint, intended for barns. The park decided it would work, and in doing so created one of the most iconic historic sites in Missouri.

Now, does anyone have a photograph from the 1980s when the mill was repainted in a shade of red that looked pink??
