Here is a historic image of the iconic Alley Mill in the early 1900s, before it was repainted in its legendary red color. We are told that in the early 1930s, the white paint on the mill was beginning to look weathered, so Missouri State Parks sent employees out to look for new paint for the mill. Bulk paint was hard to find in Shannon County during the Great Depression, and there were very few options. The cheapest paint in the largest quantity that the men could find was red paint, intended for barns. The park decided it would work, and in doing so created one of the most iconic historic sites in Missouri.

Now, does anyone have a photograph from the 1980s when the mill was repainted in a shade of red that looked pink??

Horse owners really are a different breed.

While the world is bundled up inside, sipping hot coffee, complaining about the cold…
we’re layering up, pulling on frozen boots, and heading out into the wind and snow.

Windchill of –20°.
Snow stinging your face.
Fingers numb before you even finish chores.

And yet… we still go.

Because somewhere out there is a horse waiting for us.
A soft nicker.
A warm breath in the cold air.
A pair of eyes that trust us completely.

We don’t check the weather and decide if it’s “worth it.”
We don’t cancel because it’s inconvenient.
We don’t get to stay inside when it’s uncomfortable.

We show up anyway.
Because they depend on us.
Because they are part of our hearts.

There is something sacred about standing in the quiet of a snowy barn.
About brushing ice from a mane.
About pulling a blanket tighter.
About whispering, “I’ve got you.”

It’s not just a hobby.
It’s not just an animal.
It’s a bond built in early mornings, frozen nights, tired muscles, and full hearts.

Are you interested in establishing a summer camp? We have two full hook-up spots available, featuring water, trash, electric 30 and 50 amp, and sewer. One spot is located in the afternoon shade. All sites offer access to the Jacks Fork River Beach at Adventure River Resort, which is conveniently located just down the road. We provide the largest stalls in Eminence, and you also have the option to set up panels at your site. Additional amenities include a shower house and round pen. We welcome both horse owners and non-horse owners, with trails accessible directly from the gate. River Outfitters offers convenient pickup from camp.
