Henderson County Rescinds Burn Ban

The Henderson County Commissioners Court has rescinded the countywide burn ban effective immediately.

The decision came Monday morning after recent rainfall and higher humidity improved fire conditions throughout the county. The change follows a recommendation from the Henderson County Fire Marshal, who reported that outdoor burning can now be conducted safely under current weather conditions.

The burn ban was originally instituted on Oct. 21 due to increased fire danger. County Judge Wade McKinney signed the order lifting the ban after consulting with fire officials.

Residents are reminded to use caution when conducting any outdoor burning and to always monitor local weather and wind conditions.

“Henderson County Commissioners Court instituted a 28-day burn ban Tuesday morning at the request of Fire Marshal Mitchell Pate. The ban will run through Nov. 18 unless Commissioners decide to cancel it.

The Fire Marshal said the county was averaging more than a fire a day over the past month.

"I've been to several fires where the fire started from a burn barrel and an ember has come out on the grass and actually crossed property lines and caused damage to a building next door," he said.

According to the Tuesday, Oct. 21, Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) the average for the county is 653, with a low of 588 and a high of 700.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is maintained by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M Forest Service and is used to determine fire potential. The scale goes up to 800 and a burn ban is suggested when the KBDI is 575.

Ignoring the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $500.”-Henderson County, Texas
