Sea purslane. Not much to look at (yet). But, doing most of the work. 🌱
It's a low, salt-tolerant succulent that grows where almost nothing else will, right at the edge where the beach meets everything else. Its roots hold sand in place. Its mat slows wind. It's one of the first things to come back after a storm, and one of the first things to disappear when a shoreline is left to fend for itself.
We've been putting it back in the ground here, alongside sea oats, railroad vine, and other native plants, in partnership with Pine Island Redfish and Mang Foundation for Peace and Reconciliation
It is slow, careful, unglamorous work. And in twenty years it's the difference between a shoreline and a memory of one. 🌿
So grateful for our partners working hard to preserve our coast, and this historic property.
