Ephraim's annual Fyr Bal Festival is celebrating 61 years on Saturday, June 20, and you're invited!

Meaning "Fire Ball" in Norwegian, this festival is about the burning of the winter witch and ushering in the long days of summer.

if you've never been to Fyr Bal, here's what's in store:

🌅 Stunning sunset views over Eagle Harbor (this happens ALL the time, but we think the sunsets are magically better on Fyr Bal weekend)
🔥 Glowing bonfires lining the beach at dusk
👑 The crowning of the Fyr Bal Chieftain (honoring a person in the village for their outstanding community service)
🎶 Live music, food, and family fun
🎆 A spectacular fireworks finale over the water

There's no better seat in the house than right here at Ephraim - Door County, Wisconsin! Watch the harbor glow from our waterfront, then stroll into the heart of the celebration.

In addition to Wilson's 120th anniversary, there's also another big anniversary in Ephraim: the 80th anniversary of the Friends of Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport

Show of hands...how many people knew we had an airport?

The airport is celebrating 80 years with a community open house this Saturday, June 6, with up-close aircraft displays, aviation history exhibits, live music, and refreshments. It's also teaming up with the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles program, introducing kids to the wonder of flight through hands-on activities.

First taking shape in the mid-1940s and officially opening to flights in 1947, the Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport has long been more than a runway. It's a vital part of Door County's emergency services, tourism, and general aviation community.

We'll never shy away from a chance to celebrate 's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor. Not only is it one of our favorite places (not to mention less than a block away from Ephraim Shores) but it's also celebrating a significant milestone this year: 120 years in business.

What was happening in 1906? A few things. It was the year of the San Francisco Earthquake. The Wright Brothers had flown a few years earlier, but powered flight was still in its infancy. Theodore Roosevelt was president of the United States and won the Nobel Peace Prize that year.

And in a little village in Ephraim, Oscar and Mattie Wilson (along with their four sons Harold, Orvis, Carl, and Hollis), opened a store featuring homemade ice cream and candy. ❤️

In a world that moves fast, Wilson's is a great reminder that a lot can be cured with an ice cream cone and a stroll through the village of Ephraim.

Join us in both congratulating Wilson's and saying thank you for being part of the fabric of our village for so many years. Ephraim wouldn't be Ephraim without you. We also might weigh a few less pounds without you, but they're ALL worth it. ☺️

The Peninsula Pulse usually drops their list of new Door County businesses in June. We'll bring that list to you as soon as it's live, but in the meantime, here are just a few of our favorites that either opened last summer or during this past winter and spring.

One thing's for sure: new businesses in Door County will always be a great combination of food, shopping, and interesting things to do.

Which of these new businesses have you already visited, and which ones are now on your to-do list?

Love reviews that are short and to the point, especially if they're glowing. We always aim to surpass expectations, so thanks for noticing, Ken!

June is a great month in Ephraim: Fyr Bal is happening on Saturday, June 20 and the weekly Evenings in Ephraim concerts at Harborside Park are set to kick off the following Monday, June 22. Don't forget to head to the Bondemarked market at the north end of the village (in the open grass lots adjacent to the Red Putter!) before the show.

If you stay at Ephraim Shores, you're just a block away from nearly all of this action. Take a look at our rooms and reservations here: https://ephraimshores.com/

A huge thank you to everyone who stayed with us over Memorial Day weekend. It's one of our favorite weekends of the year.

Part of it is the combination of warm (well, warmer!) weather and seeing the peninsula fully "awake" for the busy season ahead, but another part is getting to see so many return guests while welcoming new ones into the fold.

This time of year is also golden: end of May and early June (especially during the week!) is a great time to be in Door County. Everything's open and the weather is solid, but there's not as much activity as there is from mid-June onward.

If you're looking for a quiet Door County getaway, you're not too late, we promise. Head here to take a look at availability and we can have you out on this sundeck in no time: https://ephraimshores.com/
