Fun fact! At the tippy-top of Highway 42 is the 1.5-mile stretch of the notorious windy road - with 15 distinct, serpentine S-curves through a dense forest, you'll find yourself looking a little closer at nature and all that it has to offer. The strip of road is now a nationally recognized historic scenic byway, a status it earned in 2021.

Fun fact! Schoolhouse Beach of Washington Island is one of FIVE pure smooth-stone pebble beaches of its kind in the world. It's a rare sandless beach with smooth limestone pebbles that were shaped by ancient glaciers over the years. The beach features crystal-clear glacial water, an old schoolhouse, and picnic areas. Removing the stones is strictly prohibited, with fines up to $250 per stone.

Built by Norwegian brothers Aslag & Halvor Anderson in 1858, the historic Anderson Dock served as an essential economic hub & steamship port. Infamously known for its colorful tags, it has long upheld the tradition of painted names on its walls. Since it was built, sailors and passengers would write their names & arrival dates on the warehouse to record safe passage and let their loved ones know they had made it. Today, visitors are encouraged to paint their names on the walls to keep this tradition going.

The Old Post Office wasn't always a restaurant. In 1874, the building opened as a general store, and in the early 1900s housed the village post office in the rear of the store. It wasn't until 1975 that the Krause family took it over and opened the restaurant whilst preserving the historic postal name. Today, the Old Post Office Restaurant features a traditional Door County fish boil and serves up a fantastic breakfast.
