Mid-September through mid-October is a spectacular time in Estes Park, but it's also a time when bull elk are highly aggressive and unpredictable. We want you to enjoy this incredible wildlife spectacle while keeping yourself—and the animals—safe.

When you stay at River Rock Cottages, you are minutes away from prime viewing spots. Keep these essential safety tips in mind during your autumn getaway:

Keep your distance: Stay at least 75 feet (25 yards) away from elk. That is about the length of two large school buses. If an animal changes its behavior because of you, you are too close.

Never get between them: Do not walk between a bull elk and his harem of cows, or between two competing bulls.

Use your zoom: Rely on binoculars, spotting scopes, or telephoto camera lenses to get that perfect close-up shot rather than physically moving closer.

Watch for warning signs: If an elk stares at you, raises its ears, or starts grinding its teeth, back away slowly immediately.

Stay in your vehicle: Often, the safest and best view of the action is from inside your car along the park roads or town meadows.
