Yay!!! Get on up there!

The road to the top is back! Trail Ridge Road is now open for the season, which means alpine views, big sky moments and that “pull over, I need a photo” feeling are officially back in Rocky Mountain National Park.

A few things to know before you go:

Timed Entry Reservations are required for Trail Ridge Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Spring conditions are still doing their thing at higher elevations, so be prepared for melting snow, icy patches and quickly changing weather.

The Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are currently closed, so please respect all barricades and closure areas.

Road status can change, so check before you head up by calling the Trail Ridge Road recorded status line at (970) 586-1222.

A heads-up for anyone planning a Rocky Mountain National Park trip this summer:

The 2026 timed entry system kicks in this Friday, May 22 — and Trail Ridge Road is targeted to open the same day.

If you plan to visit between May 22 and mid-October, you'll need a timed entry permit. There are two types:

🏔️ Bear Lake Road corridor — 5am to 6pm window
🏔️ Rest of the park (including Trail Ridge Road) — 9am to 2pm window

Each is $2 on Recreation.gov, plus the regular park entrance fee.

Permits for May 22 through June 30 went on sale May 1 and they go fast.

But here's the trick most people miss: the park releases next-day permits every night at 7pm Mountain Time. That's how you grab a spot if your weather forecast shifts or you forgot to plan ahead.

A few things to keep in mind:

🌨️ Trail Ridge Road plows have been working since mid-April. Memorial Day weekend is the target, but spring storms can push it back. Call the status line at (970) 586-1222 before you drive.

⚠️ Even after the road opens, expect icy conditions, overnight freezes,
and weather that can flip in an hour at 12,000 feet.

🚧 Old Fall River Road typically doesn't open until July 4.

Don't have a reservation? That's ok! You can enter the park before 9 a.m. or anytime after 2 p.m. without a timed entry reservation.

If you want to enter Bear Lake without a reservation, you'll need to arrive before 5 a.m. in the morning or after 6 p.m in the evening.

I wrote a full breakdown of both permit types, when to book, the nightly release trick, what to do if you don't get a permit, and current Trail Ridge Road status — link in the first comment.

Big thanks to the plow operators who've been working long shifts in brutal conditions to make this opening happen.

Yeah, snow! We so need it. That is some tough shoveling!

Yeah, snow! We so need it. That is some tough shoveling!

Yesterday's spring snowstorm brought more snow to high elevation areas of Rocky Mountain National Park. This morning, there was over a foot of new snow on the ground at Rainbow Curve and snow is still falling. More snow is in the extended forecast over the next several days.

We are grateful for the additional moisture brought by this spring snowstorm.

Based on current conditions, along with incoming weather and wind in the extended forecast for high elevation areas of RMNP, it is unknown when Trail Ridge Road will open to vehicles for through travel.

Trail Ridge Road is currently closed at Many Parks Curve on the east side of the park and at Colorado River Trailhead on the west side of the park. Keep an eye on the RMNP webpage and official social media accounts for updates.

Thank you to the RMNP Roads Crew for all their hard work to clear snow from park roads!
