Yesterday morning, I skied up around Notchtop Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. It felt wonderfully wintery up there even though there was a lot less snow than normal.

I've always been a lover of winter. It simplifies the world making it feel fresh, bright, and peaceful. I imagine the flowers and grasses sleeping under the snow as they gather strength, waiting to reveal their dazling colors and fragrant aromas when the warmth of the sun awakens them.

Welcome snowfall is again happening in the mountains of Colorado after what has proven to have been a dry and relatively warm winter so far. There are few things more lovely, and reassuring for the year ahead, than high country forests draped with snow. As I search my photo archives for images to consider for the 2027 calendar, I found this image captured near Mills Lake in Rocky that speaks to the wonders of winter in the mountains.
