Good story simple message
Good morning! This old pitcher looks like it should be thrown away! It has no monetary value…totally worthless to most but to me it has a memory that is worth far more than mere money!
It was a cold wet rainy day in the winter and daddy came home carrying a big box. I was about eight years old and we lived in a house in the holler. It had no electricity and we had an outhouse and had to carry our water. No luxuries at all but we were warm and had plenty of plain food to eat…nothing fancy.
He set the box down and pulled out three water pitchers. Lovely old things. But one had a large chip in it. I have no idea where he got them. “I got one for you,” he told mama, “one for you ma and one for mine. You keep a good one and give your ma a good one. My ma won’t care about the chip in it.”
Mama said, “oh no, Jake, I’ll take the one with the chip. I don’t want to give either of them a chipped one!”
I think of the love mama and daddy put into the simple gifts. She took the one that was the most unloved. Even the color was not as pretty as the others. She had it all those years and now I have it. Old chipped piece of pottery and loved. I think of humans as cracked as that piece, some much more broken, perhaps barely held together with the glue of life and pain. Held together by one great LOVE! Have a wonderful day even if it is cold and dreary!
