Eureka Springs, the quirkiest little town in the Mid-South, is nestled among the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. Selected as one of America's Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Eureka Springs has been a destination for romantic getaways, “self-care” travel (long before it was called that!), and outdoor adventures since before the town’s incorporation in 1880, during the Victorian Era.
These historical postcards show what Eureka Springs looked like 100-plus years ago – and most of these scenes are still similar today, but so much prettier in living color, with beautiful gardens around the springs downtown and 100 years’ worth of “new” trees!
But even these postcards don’t tell the early story of Eureka Springs: Long before tourists began coming here, Native Americans flocked to some of the 62 natural springs flowing from the giant rocks beneath the surface of the hillsides, considering them to be healing waters. These springs played a vital part in the modern development of the community, as businessmen built a resort community around the springs and began marketing the “curative properties” of the cold mineral waters that flowed year-round – and still do to this day.
Several dozen of the springs are now the focal point of small park areas throughout the town, and they remain popular destinations for tourists and locals alike. For more information on where and how to find these springs, visit https://www.exploresouthernhistory.com/eureka9.html.
Eureka Springs continues to draw visitors with its natural beauty and the preserved Victorian buildings of its Historic District, which encompasses the entire downtown area. Right in the center of that Historic District, just a few hundred steps away from Main Street shops and restaurants, you’ll find The Benton Place Inn, surrounded in the rear by a two-story-tall wall of rock that’s typical of the Ozarks and Eureka Springs.
