History of Maplewood Inn
Maplewood Inn is located in historic Fair Haven, VT, a picturesque village nestled along the central Vermont/New York border that was first chartered in 1779. This beautifully restored Greek-Revival home was built c. 1843 and was the home of Asahel H. Kidder, a prominent resident of Fair Haven and member of the VT state legislature. Mr. Kidder herded sheep, manufactured maple syrup, and raised dairy cows on this property. After his death in 1876, Mr. Kidder's son-in-law, Isaac Wood, opened the Maplewood Farm Dairy on the property in 1880, which was in operation for nearly a century, spanning 3 generations of the Wood family. There were several large outbuildings on the property which housed the dairy and creamery operation. The Wood family operated the Maplewood Farm Dairy until 1979 when it was closed. In 1981, the dairy buildings were removed, but members of the Wood family continued to reside in the main house until 1986, when the property was purchased for the purpose of opening it as a Bed & Breakfast. After many renovations, the home was operating as a Bed & Breakfast from 1986-2013. Paul and Roy Allen-Webber purchased the home in August 2014, and after making several additional renovations, reopened the Maplewood Inn in Summer 2015. The Asahel H. Kidder House was listed in both the National and Vermont Historical Registry of Historic Homes in 1997. Maplewood Inn earned the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2017, 2018, 2019; is a TripAdvisor GreenLeader; and a Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State.
