A “little” piece of Fairbanks history, and an engineering marvel at the time it was built.

This massive pipe running through the hills north of Fairbanks is part of the Davidson Ditch, one of the biggest engineering projects of Alaska’s early mining era.
Construction began in the mid 1920s, and the system was completed in 1929. Stretching roughly 90 miles, the Davidson Ditch carried water from the Chatanika River toward the Fairbanks mining district. But it wasn’t simply an open ditch. The system included miles of channels, a 3,716 foot tunnel, and large steel pipes called inverted siphons, like the one pictured here, that carried water across deep valleys.
The water helped make large scale gold mining around Fairbanks possible. It was used to strip away frozen overburden, thaw ground, operate hydraulic equipment, and support the enormous gold dredges working areas such as Goldstream and surrounding creeks. Before projects like this, getting enough water to mining ground was one of the biggest limits on how much material miners could process.
Nearly a century later, pieces of the Davidson Ditch still stretch across the Interior landscape. What looks like an old rusty pipe disappearing into the autumn forest is actually part of the infrastructure that helped transform Fairbanks from the pick and shovel mining era into large scale industrial gold mining.
Built nearly 100 years ago, and still hard to miss when you know where to look.

Well, I think winter has arrived. Had our first hard frost at 27° last night September 23rd. Only seven more days until we close the park for the season.
The office building will remain open for showers and laundry thru the winter as usual.

First snow of the season has arrived.

Of course, it’s too warm (32° F) to “stick” or “ lay up”. But still… winter is coming.

The RV park is open until September 30th, but with no water at the sites. We blew the pipes down yesterday Sept 22nd. But the main building will be open all winter as usual for showers and laundry.

Thank you to everyone who came and visited us in 2026; we enjoyed your company and we hope you enjoyed our little slice of heaven here in Alaska.

One of our park visitors.
The Northern Moosed is open thru September 30 ( although water to the sites will likely be taken down earlier than that, depending on nighttime temps). Right now daytime temps are low to mid-50’s Fahrenheit, and nighttime temps are upper 30’s to mid- 40’s.
