This is Margaret from MI Gluten Free Gal. Last year we did a survey about gluten free food insecurity in Michigan.

This year I want to try to create a master list (and map) of pantries in Michigan who offer gluten free and food allergy options. I know to do so would be an undertaking I can't possibly accomplish on my own.

WHERE YOU COME IN-
I'm looking for people who are willing to call pantries. To make this more organized, I'm asking people who want to help to fill out a short form so I can organize us effectively. https://forms.gle/eZs1bSbkXENngVa58

Revisiting the Michigan GF Food Insecurity Project
I know it has been a while since I've mentioned my project to address gluten free food insecurity in Michigan.

My husband and I successfully moved from Flint to Lansing in September. Since then I have had a few health issues, and I'm finally feeling "back to normal."
Now I want to focus again on addressing gluten free food insecurity needs in Michigan.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN-
The first thing I'd like to do is create a list (and map) of Michigan food pantries that already have a gluten free shelf. And/or would be interested in starting one.

There are 7 food banks in Michigan that serve the various food pantries across the state.

I'm looking for people who would be willing to call food pantries in their county. I"m *not* looking for random pantry names in the comments, as that's too hard for me to keep track of.

You DO NOT have to buy food for these pantries.
At this point we are just gathering information and creating a framework.
I will even give you the questions to ask.

If you are willing to help with calling, please fill out this short 5 question form with your basic information.
https://forms.gle/eZs1bSbkXENngVa58

On my end, I will try to contact each of the 7 food banks and ask for a list of all the pantries in their area.

Thank you in advance for being willing to help fellow gluten free Michiganders find safe food at their local pantries.

Fellow Michiganders, please know that there is a restaurant labeling bill that has been proposed by Rep. Brenda Carter from Pontiac.

It is currently in the Regulatory Reform Committee. The chair of that committee is Joseph Aragona. If he is in your rep, please contact him and ask him to support this legislation.

I Went Down a Rabbit Hole
Last week I shared about proposed legislation in Michigan that would require food allergy labeling on restaurant menus.

Then my good friend Sharon from Nut Free Wok shared about a similar restaurant labeling bill in Maryland.

So I used the website Bill Track 50 to look up other food allergen and gluten free related laws in countries across the United States.

There are 12 states (VT, MA, NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA, MI, IL, WI, MO, MS) that have some sort of bill that impacts those with food allergies, Celiac Disease, and/or autoimmune diseases.

In my blog post I include how to look up who your legislators are, so you can contact them about supporting these bills. (And I link to each proposed bill so you can read it yourself.)

Don't have any proposed bills in your state? You can take the text of the bills I share to your own state legislator, and use that as a starting point for the changes you'd like to see.

Would Your Celiac Child Like to Attend Camp?
There is one week at Camp Copneconic in Fenton, MI that is focused on allowing kids with Celiac Disease meet one another and just be a kid.

While the camp can safely accommodate gluten free needs any time, this allows kids with Celiac Disease to meet other people "like them" and not feel so alone.

One week of camp is $885. Scholarships are available.

Product warning: Six bags of Trader Joe's gluten-free rolled oats, from 4 different lots were recently commissioned for testing by Gluten Free Watchdog. Results ranged from < 5 parts per million of gluten to 120 parts per million. Test results are consistent with heterogeneous (i.e., not evenly distributed) gluten cross contact within and between lots of Trader Joe's gluten-free rolled oats. Test results were shared with Trader Joe's and with the Food and Drug Administration. The product report is available on the public side of glutenfreewatchdog.org--under "sample product reports" on the left side of the page.
