Recent beach replenishment projects have expanded the beaches and built up the dunes in Bethany Beach, South Bethany, and Fenwick Island. Fenwick Island is home to an historic 89-foot tall lighthouse built in 1858. Fire control towers, built by the U.S. Army during World War II to protect the coast from invasion, still stand along the shore. Local museums, such as the Indian River Lifesaving Station, tell of our area’s rich maritime history, while a “whispering giant,” the 24-foot tall wooden sculpture Chief Little Owl stands in downtown Bethany Beach to honor our Native American heritage.
