On the northern tip of Florida, on Amelia Island, sits the charming town of Fernandina Beach, a place with a history so colorful it is known as the town under eight flags. 🚩 Over the centuries, this small island port has flown the flags of France, Spain, Britain, and more, a reflection of its strategic value and its wild, often lawless past.
The historic downtown is a beautifully preserved slice of Victorian Florida, with ornate 19th-century storefronts, gas lamps, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss. 🌳 In its heyday Fernandina was a bustling port and a rowdy frontier town, home to sea captains, smugglers, and the birthplace of the modern sh*****ng industry. Today those same streets are lined with shops, galleries, and restaurants, and the harbor still sends out shrimp boats, keeping the maritime heritage alive. It is one of the most atmospheric historic districts in the entire state.
