Window Blind Peak catches first light as it rises dramatically above the San Rafael River. Located near the middle of the San Rafael Swell uplift, the peak consists of Triassic- to Jurassic-age Chinle Formation, Wingate Sandstone, and Kayenta Formation capped by the Jurassic-age Navajo Sandstone.

Emery County is rich in Fremont Archeological sites. You can see many rock art sites around our area. Some of the most notable are Buckhorn Wash, Temple Mountain Wash, Muddy Creek, Ivie Creek, Ferron Box just to name a few!

Most of Utah's rock art is credited to the Fremont Culture.
Archaeologists first identified the Fremont Culture in 1928 near Torrey, Utah, and named it after the Fremont River.
Fremont rock art is divided into two categories: petroglyphs and pictographs.
A petroglyph is an image or design cut into the rock surface without the use of pigment or coloring. Pictographs are painted on light colored sandstone surfaces.
The Fremont used their fingers, dog hair, or yucca fibers as brushes and hollow bird bones filled with pigment as a spray gun and was often used to spray around a hand placed on the rock. 🎨🖌🖼

One of the most famous sites is tucked into the Book Cliffs of Carbon and Emery Counties- just west of Tavaputs Plateau, lies the Range Creek Valley.
Range Creek is home to some of the richest undisturbed remains of Fremont Native American culture in the southwest. This special place has been well taken care of by generations of cowboys and ranchers and has been preserved in time.
Within this canyon lie numerous remains of the Fremont Culture which once inhabited this area a thousand years ago. It takes a careful eye to see the many pictograph and petroglyph panels and ancient food storage granaries and pithouses.
