USA TODAY 10Best Reader's Choice Awards has nominated Gitchi-Gami State Trail for Best Recreational Trail! This 36-mile trail meanders through multiple state parks along the North Shore of Minnesota, offering splendid views of Lake Superior and easy connection to the communities of Schroeder, Lutsen, and Grand Marais. The trail is still being built, and will reach an impressive 86 miles when finished.

The Moose Run trail system will open again this Thursday. With the exception of the portion in this picture. This trail has a bridge that was damaged and will remain closed till repairs are made. All trails will have washouts, but none that can’t be navigated with some caution and common sense. Don’t prove us wrong! There is a detour around the Finland State Forest Campground. (Bridge damaged) It will run you on to Cty #6. (Little Marais Rd.) either back to Hwy 1 or to the trail crossing at Dubbins Pit Rd. Detour is marked with orange arrows.

We’re working as fast as possible, but we are still at the mercy of “Mother Nature!”

The Bean and Bear Lake Loop on the Superior Hiking Trail will be closed starting May 15.

“Due to deferred maintenance and high-usage of these sections, both the Bean and Bear Lakes Loop and Split Rock River Loop are experiencing serious erosion and tread issues, and also feature aging infrastructure. Both loops require updating to modern trail design standards,” the Superior Hiking Trail Association said in a news release.

“These renewal projects will restore and renew these gorgeous North Shore trail loops to be enjoyed for many years to come while also increasing their ability to withstand high visitor use and weather-related impacts.”

The association is working on the projects in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
