Chapter 8: The Work That Remains

Before guests arrive, there is quiet work.

Small arrangements placed in rooms.
Fresh linens checked again.
Details most people will never see being prepared with care.

In Agnes Olle’s time, hospitality was not a performance.
It was work done behind the scenes so guests could feel at ease the moment they stepped through the door.

The work looks different now, but the intention remains the same.

If you’ve ever stayed here, you know how much the small details matter.
You may not see them happening — only the feeling they leave behind.

Some things change with time.
The intention behind them does not.

Chapter 7 — The Work Behind the Welcome

Before guests ever sit down, there has always been someone preparing this space with care.

In Agnes Olle’s time, hospitality meant greeting each guest personally, tending to their needs, and making sure no one felt like a stranger for long.

That part of the work has never changed.

The rooms are still prepared by hand.
The details are still checked twice.
The intention remains the same — to make each guest feel expected, not simply accommodated.

Much of the effort that makes a stay feel effortless happens just beyond view.

If you’ve ever stayed here, you know how much the small details matter.

Some things change with time.
The intention behind them does not.

Chapter 6 - The Work of Her Hands

Agnes Olle didn’t just run this hotel — she made it feel like home.

She crocheted warmth into quiet corners.
She stitched quilts for every bed.
She embroidered small comforts meant to be noticed only when needed.

This wasn’t decoration.
It was devotion.

After full days of cooking, cleaning, and managing guests, she still sat down and worked with her hands — creating softness in a world that rarely offered it back.

Every stitch tells the same story:
Care was never optional here. It was the standard.

These details still live on in the rooms she once prepared for her guests.

Chapter Five - Where Her Work Met Her Life

💡 Did you know Agnes Olle received guests from the very room she called home?

This doorway marked the threshold between Agnes Olle’s private space and her role as innkeeper.

When Agnes purchased the hotel in 1926, guest rooms — including her own — were far smaller and far more modest than what exists today. Her living quarters did not offer separation from the work of the hotel. Instead, they placed her within it.

From this room, Agnes could greet guests, respond to needs, and remain close to the daily rhythm of the hotel — all without ever truly stepping away from home. After being widowed, she continued to live and work here for decades, carrying both responsibility and hospitality within the same walls.

We don’t have photographs of her room as it appeared during her lifetime. What we do have is the understanding that her private life and her work were never far apart.

This doorway wasn’t just an entrance.
It was a place where duty and daily life quietly met.

Agnes Olle didn’t just keep the doors open.
She stood in them. 🤍

Shake your tail feathers Fri-Yay! 💃

Last weekend was such a fun opportunity to assist in planning and hosting a Gilmore Girls themed, grown-up slumber party and morning after mimosa bar! Jayme Chantae Houston and I were entertaining an adult themed slumber party package when the email came through and it seemed meant to be!

I would like to thank Tammi at Edna's Kitchenette for stepping up to the task of making a coffee cake for the birthday girl! Very yummy! I'd like to thank Terry Ehler for always being Flatonia's go-to for paint parties and for creating the Luke's Diner Gilmore Girls themed canvases! And lastly, thank you to the Red Vault Bistro for taking care of the birthday dinner! It was a pleasure working with you all to make the event and I look forward to future adventures!

If you have a fun idea for an event and want help coordinating a memorable and special time, please reach out! It would be a pleasure to work with you. See ya soon!

Chapter Four - The Comfort She Created

💡 Did you know the quilts on the beds at the Olle Hotel were made by the woman who ran it—by hand, one room at a time?

Alongside running the hotel and preparing three cooked meals a day for her guests, Agnes Olle also made the quilts for every single bed.

Agnes was known as an exceptional quilter, recognized for a style that was uniquely her own. These weren’t decorative accents added later. They were working quilts — made to be used, folded, washed, and relied upon night after night.

In a time before modern heating and conveniences, a quilt meant more than comfort. It meant warmth, care, and reassurance. By stitching these quilts herself, Agnes extended hospitality beyond clean rooms and full meals — she offered something deeply personal.

When guests rested here, they were covered by something Agnes had made with her own hands.

Agnes Olle didn’t just keep the doors open.
She stitched comfort into every room. 🤍

The Olle Hotel would like to thank Chris and Ken from the Gideon's International in Columbus, TX for stopping by this morning to deliver new Bibles to the hotel. The Gideons work with hotels to place the new Bibles. They will retrieve the older Bibles and redistribute those to jails & prison facilities so they can continue serving, witnessing, and distributing God's word to those while incarcerated.

First Placement: The first Bibles were placed in the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana, in 1908.
Founders & Origin: The organization was formed in 1899 in Boscobel, Wisconsin, by John H. Nicholson, Samuel E. Hill, and William J. Knights to provide spiritual support for traveling businessmen.
Expansion: Following the 1908 initiative, the project grew rapidly, with one million Bibles placed by January 1929.

Chapter Three - Decisions Made With Intention

💡 Did you know the glass-front kitchen cabinets at the Olle Hotel are original—and were chosen by Agnes Olle herself?

At a glance, these cabinets can feel surprisingly modern. That’s exactly what makes them remarkable.

When I asked Agnes Olle’s granddaughter whether these cabinets were original to the hotel, her answer was simple: yes.

Glass-front cabinets existed at the time, but they were far from standard—especially in a working hotel kitchen. Choosing them speaks to something deeper than style. Glass doors allowed for visibility, efficiency, and order. You could see what you had, what needed replenishing, and what was ready for use.

By the time Agnes and her husband purchased the building in 1926, Agnes was not just maintaining a hotel—she was running a business. These cabinets reflect practical decision-making by a woman who understood workflow, cleanliness, and the demands of feeding and housing guests day after day.

To me, this detail feels like a quiet statement of confidence.
Agnes made choices that worked. She didn’t need them to look impressive—only to function well.

Agnes Olle didn’t just keep the doors open.
She ran the hotel with clarity and purpose. 🤍

LET ME EXPLAIN: The Doorbell 🔔

Some homes have doorbells.
This one has a bell.
Not a polite little chime.
Not a soft digital ding.

A bell.

The kind that announces a person.
The kind that says, “Someone has arrived.”
It has welcomed guests for generations.
And yes… it still works.

I usually give guests a quick tour of it once they’re inside — it’s far too easy to overlook when it’s sitting quietly.
But trust me… when it rings, you can’t ignore it.
Despite the fact that it still startles me more often than I’d like to admit, it remains one of my favorite parts of owning a historic building.
Because that sound doesn’t just mean someone is at the door.
It means a story is about to walk in.
And around here, a good visit still begins with a ring. 🔔

Long before notifications and "I'm here" texts...

there was a bell.

It still rings.
It's still loud.
And yes....I still jump...every...time.🔔

Thankfully, I recover quickly.

Love was definitely in the air!!! 🥰

💍 Yesterday the Olle hosted a quiet little Valentine’s Day elopement.

No big production.
No crowds.
Just two people choosing each other.

Moments like this make me think of Agnes Olle, who ran this hotel nearly a century ago — and had VERY strong opinions about love and marriage.

Family stories say that in the 1940s or 50s, she would not allow an unmarried couple to stay here together.

On at least one occasion, she reportedly sent her 6-year-old grandson upstairs to ask a newly checked-in couple for proof of marriage.

He later said he’d never even seen her climb the stairs — but up he went, tasked with delivering the message:

If they couldn’t produce a marriage certificate… they would have to leave.

(Imagine opening your door to that at six years old.)

Times have changed.

Today, the Olle is a place where love stories begin, reunite, celebrate, and sometimes quietly slip away to become official.

And yes — if you choose to elope, I can even officiate. 💜

Agnes might raise an eyebrow… but I think she would still approve of love winning in the end.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Olle Hotel.

ETA: Special thank you to our fire chief, Chris Swenning, for doing such a fantastic job officiating these nuptials! Splendid job!
