Got a tight backyard project but no room for a big machine? This is what you need.
We just added this brand-new 2026 Hitachi ZX17U-5N to the rental fleet. It’s a 1.7-ton mini excavator with a zero tail swing—meaning you can work right up against houses, fences, and buildings without worrying about smashing the back end when you rotate.
The best part? The undercarriage retracts so you can squeeze through most standard backyard gates, then widens back out to give you a stable base while you dig.
What it’s good for:
• Irrigation and utility trenching
• Digging out posts, bushes, and small stumps
• Backyard landscaping and grading
• Tight access jobs where bigger machines won’t fit
Straight up: If you can’t get a bigger machine back there, this is the one that gets the job done. It has plenty of power, but it’s light enough to haul yourself and the controls are incredibly smooth—even if you’ve never run an excavator before. (Need a trailer?
