2026 Starts With a Bang! 🌕

The first full Moon of the year arrives this Saturday, January 3, and it’s not an ordinary one. Known as the Wolf Moon, this lunar event is also a Supermoon, meaning the Moon will be closer to Earth than usual. Because of this, it will appear about 7% larger and 15% brighter than an average full Moon, making it especially striking in the night sky.

The name Wolf Moon comes from ancient winter traditions, inspired by the sound of wolves howling during the coldest, darkest nights of the year. For centuries, people have watched this Moon as a marker of deep winter and seasonal change.

✨ Bonus skywatch: Look closely near the Moon and you’ll notice a bright, steady “star.” That is Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The gas giant is currently well positioned and shining brilliantly, creating a beautiful pairing with the Moon that’s easy to see with the naked eye.

No telescope is required, but binoculars can enhance the view. Find a spot with a clear horizon and minimal light pollution for the best experience.
