The older I get, the more I understand why people begin choosing quiet gardens, good books, slow mornings, baking and long walks over constant noise.

It’s not that life becomes less interesting.

You simply start realizing that peace is worth protecting.

You stop needing to be everywhere, hear everything or keep up with everyone.

Sometimes, a quiet day, a warm meal, a good book and a little time alone can feel like more than enough.

Maybe growing older isn’t about wanting less from life.

Maybe it’s about finally knowing what deserves your attention.

Skunks have a bad reputation, but they can play an important role in controlling pests around homes and gardens.

They eat a wide variety of prey, including grubs, insects, mice, small rodents, and other invertebrates. Their digging can often be a sign that they are searching for grubs or other food beneath the soil.

Skunks are also known to prey on yellowjackets and other wasps, including their larvae and nests, although they are not simply a natural replacement for pest control.

Most skunks are generally not aggressive toward people and prefer to avoid confrontation. When given space, they usually move along rather than looking for trouble.

So the animal people often notice because of its smell may actually be helping keep some unwanted pests under control.

Sometimes wildlife doesn’t need to be feared or removed.

Sometimes it just needs a little space to do its job.

Belgium turned the roof of a railway tunnel into a solar power plant generating electricity directly above the trains running through it.

Along the high-speed rail line between Antwerp and the Dutch border, around 16,000 solar panels cover approximately 50,000 square metres of the 3.4-kilometre tunnel roof.

The installation generates about 3.3 GWh of electricity each year. The power is used for railway infrastructure such as signalling, lighting, heating and stations, with electricity also contributing to the railway network used by trains.

The tunnel was originally constructed in part to protect the surrounding forest and reduce the environmental impact of the high-speed railway. Adding solar panels to its roof gave the existing infrastructure another purpose without requiring a separate solar farm.

When it entered operation in 2011, the project was an early large-scale example of integrating renewable-energy generation directly into railway infrastructure.

Instead of finding another piece of land for solar panels, Belgium used space that was already there above the railway.

Sometimes the most useful infrastructure is the infrastructure we learn to use twice.

I don’t want AI in every app.

I don’t want endless data centers spreading across forests and farmland.

I want rivers clean enough to swim in without wondering what’s in the water.

I want forests where I can spend an entire day without hearing traffic or construction.

I want bees and other pollinators to survive, because so much of the food and plant life we depend on relies on them.

I want birds to keep returning each spring.

I want healthy soil that can continue growing food for generations to come.

I want wetlands that help protect communities from floods instead of being paved over.

I want whales in healthy oceans, old-growth trees that outlive us, and night skies where the stars are brighter than the city lights.

I want children to know what it feels like to catch tadpoles in a stream, climb a tree, hear frogs after the rain, and watch butterflies drift across a meadow.

I want more parks, more hiking trails, more protected wilderness, and more places where nature is allowed to exist simply because it has value beyond what we can build on it.

I want progress that works with nature instead of constantly asking nature to make another sacrifice.

Technology has given us extraordinary things. It has connected the world, advanced medicine, expanded knowledge and solved problems previous generations could barely imagine.

But sometimes it feels as though every new solution comes with another warehouse, another transmission line, another forest cleared, another river altered, another landscape transformed.

Progress should make our lives better.

It shouldn’t leave the living world poorer.

The greatest achievement of this century won’t necessarily be building the smartest AI, the biggest data center or the first permanent city on another planet.

It will be learning how to innovate while protecting the ecosystems that sustain us.

Because we have survived without AI.

We have survived without smartphones.

We have survived without data centers.

But we cannot live without clean water.

We cannot grow food without healthy soils.

And human societies cannot thrive without the forests, oceans, wetlands, pollinators and other natural systems that support life.

The future doesn’t have to be a choice between technology and nature.

The real challenge is making sure we still have both.

I don’t want a city on Mars.

I want a planet worth staying on.
