Today is the NWR Youth Fishing Derby at Folkston Elementary, hosted by the Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and fishing is very much on our minds here too.

At Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground on Highway 121 in Folkston, Georgia, we have a catch-and-release fishing pond right on the property. Whether you are an early riser who wants a quiet hour by the water or a family looking for a morning ritual, it is one of the most loved spots on our 13 acres.

Reminder: today is also a FREE Fishing Day in Georgia. June 13 is the other one.

Summer at the Okefenokee is a different world.

The swamp is fully alive in June and July. Alligators are active. Black bears are on the move. Fireflies light up the evenings. Hundreds of bird species fill the trees. And the nights are warm and the sky above Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground on Highway 121 in Folkston, Georgia is as dark and clear as it gets anywhere in the country.

Tonight is the Blue Moon, and the swamp is putting on a show.

The second full moon of May rises tonight, and from here at Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground in Folkston, Georgia, you have one of the darkest, clearest skies in the entire country to watch it from. No agenda. No equipment needed. Just step outside and look up.

And while you are out there, write this down: August 12 and 13.

That is the Perseids meteor shower Earth passing through the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, producing up to 100 meteors per hour at peak. In 2026 there is no moonlight to wash them out, making this one of the best Perseids years in recent memory. We will be talking a lot more about this in the weeks ahead. Start thinking about your August plans now.

This is your reminder that our restaurant and bar are open to the public no campsite required, ever.

At Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground on Highway 121 at the main gate of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston, Georgia, we serve real Southern food made on site and pour the only tap beer in the Folkston area.

Whether you are a neighbor who has been meaning to stop in, a day tripper coming off the refuge, or just out for a drive on 121 you are welcome here. Sit down, eat well, and stay as long as you like.

This is not a campground restaurant that tolerates the public. It is a restaurant that happens to sit at the edge of one of the most beautiful wild places in America.
