Sea turtle nesting season is one of the most special times of year on our island. From May through October, loggerhead sea turtles return to Folly Beach to lay their eggs, and hatchlings will eventually make their incredible journey to the ocean.
If you spot a marked nesting area like this one during your stay, please help us protect these amazing creatures by following a few simple guidelines:
🌙 Lights Out at Night
Sea turtles and hatchlings use natural moonlight to find the ocean. Bright lights can disorient them.
• Turn off beachfront lights when possible.
• Close blinds and curtains after dark.
• Avoid using flashlights or phone lights on the beach at night.
🏖️ Give Nests Plenty of Space
Please do not set up chairs, umbrellas, tents, toys, or other beach equipment within 25 feet of a marked sea turtle nest.
🐢 Respect Marked Nesting Areas
Never touch, move, or disturb the stakes, tape, or protective coverings around a nest.
🚶 Leave No Trace
Before leaving the beach each evening, remove all personal belongings and fill in any large holes or sand structures.
Every nest matters, and these small efforts help protect one of Folly Beach's most treasured visitors.
