Let’s meet a few more hardworking team members at Indian Lodge.

Brandon Matura has served as the office manager since early 2024. His background was in the cruise ship industry. He enjoys views of the park from Skyline Drive, hiking, and the drier west Texas climate.

Carla De Hoyos joined the crew in spring of 2025 as a customer service representative. Her constant smile and warm personality lights up the front office. Carla grew up in nearby Marfa and knows the area well. She loves the scenery surrounding the Lodge. “I love showing everyone the Historic Lobby because I can’t get over the beauty of it!”

We couldn’t operate the Indian Lodge without these two. Thanks for all that you do!

Check out this beautiful painting from the early 1930s…possibly the earliest rendering of Skyline Drive.

In November of 1934, an artist named Max Bachofen was sent to Davis Mountains by the Treasury Department's Public Works of Art Project to paint the newly built Civilian Conservation Corps camp that had recently begun work on Davis Mountains State Park and Indian Lodge.

In his assignment, he was told "In Choosing your subject I wish you would stress the life and activities of the camp proper, or any buildings or construction programs which may be in progress".

Bachofen set up his easel and got to work, completing this painting of the CCC camp, with enrollees in the foreground and possibly one of the earliest images of Skyline Drive in the background.

The original painting now rests in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art after being transferred there by the National Park Service.

Mountains in Texas?! Indeed…

Welcome to the Davis Mountains, a sky island oasis located in the northern portion of the Chihuahuan Desert. Standing roughly 5,000-8,000 feet in elevation, this area encompasses @ 900 square miles.

As you approach, watch the terrain change and the temperature drop. Desert scrub starts to merge with grasslands. More varied trees appear in the canyons along Limpia Creek. Even higher up, pines dot the mountainsides. More elevation = increased precipitation = more varied plant & animal life…the sky island effect.

Just 3 miles west of Fort Davis, TX, Davis Mountains State Park offers over 100 campsites 🏕️, 20+ miles of hiking trails, 2 renowned bird blinds, CCC-built structures, and beautiful views like these.

8:30-9:30pm is a great time to catch the sunset up on Skyline Drive during springtime and summer.

We’re 2 hours north of Big Bend National Park and 2 hours south of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Make us a stop on your next West Texas journey. ⛰️
