Big thanks to Jesse Ellgren from Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross for returning to speak about his research on black bears. He is tracking their migratory movements with game cameras all along the Rio Grande between Big Bend and Del Rio. His conclusions this fall should give us a better idea of what the future looks like as we learn how to live with these animals again. Black bear used to be prevalent here in the Davis mountains until hunting wiped them out by the 1940s.

If you’d like more information, please watch this TPWD produced short film called “Return of the Black Bear” available on YouTube.
