Have you seen the Old Man of the Lake?

One of Oregon's strangest natural wonders isn't a waterfall, volcano, or hidden cave. It's a tree stump.
Floating in the deep blue waters of is the famous "Old Man of the Lake," a massive hemlock stump that has been bobbing upright on the lake's surface for more than 120 years.
Standing roughly 30 feet tall, the stump was first documented in 1896 and quickly became one of Crater Lake's most unusual attractions. Scientists later studied it and discovered the reason it stays afloat: air trapped inside the hollow trunk acts like a natural flotation device, allowing it to remain balanced vertically in the water.
The stump earned its memorable nickname in 1906 from , one of the driving forces behind protecting Crater Lake as a national park. As winds and currents pushed the stump around the lake, Steel thought it resembled an old man standing in the water, and the name stuck.
More than a century later, the Old Man continues to drift across the lake, sometimes traveling miles from where it was previously seen. Despite years of harsh winters, storms, and exposure to the elements, it remains remarkably upright, making it one of the most fascinating and enduring mysteries in Oregon.
If you ever visit Crater Lake, keep an eye on the water. You might just spot Oregon's oldest floating resident.
