July's Artist of the Month is Stanford Handfield.
Stanford Handfield, a.k.a TCI Shellman, is a native of Bottle Creek, North Caicos. He is a professional Diesel Mechanic by trade but has made hand-made crafts from conch shells for the past 27 years. Although Stanford has never trained professionally in his art, he describes himself as a creative artist. He has always been creative, he said his first experience with making conch shell art came from someone asking him to make something from the center spine (spiral) of the conch shell, he attempted it, and the rest is history.
Today Stanford works full-time, supplying most of the hotels on Providenciales with his art that includes turtles, fish and flamingo ornaments, conch shell bowls with spoons, trivets, coasters, and an assortment of keyrings. He says he is currently creating new items, including a hand sanitizer container made from the conch shell, and is looking forward to displaying his arts at the Cruise Center on Grand Turk.
