U.S. Army Private First Class Herbert Pililaʻau served with Company C, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. Born in Waiʻanae, Hawaii, he was the ninth of 14 children and was drafted into the Army, completing basic training at Fort Shafter in Honolulu before deploying to Korea in 1951. Pililaʻau fought in the Battle of Bloody Ridge and later at Heartbreak Ridge in September 1951. During intense fighting, he volunteered to stay behind and cover his unit’s withdrawal as enemy forces advanced. Pililaʻau fired his automatic rifle until it ran out of ammunition, then continued fighting with grenades and eventually hand-to-hand combat until he was overwhelmed. For his extraordinary bravery, Pililaʻau was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman, becoming the first Hawaiian to receive the nation’s highest military honor.
