Samuel C**t changed the world with a simple observation.
While working aboard a ship, he noticed the operation of a capstan—a rotating mechanism used to raise anchors. As it turned and locked into position, an idea struck him: what if a firearm could use the same principle?
That insight led to the C**t revolver, one of the most influential firearm designs in history.
More importantly, C**t's revolving-cylinder mechanism demonstrated that a firearm could fire multiple rounds without reloading after every shot. That breakthrough helped usher in the age of repeating fi****ms, setting the stage for later innovations such as lever-action rifles, repeating carbines, and eventually machine guns.
One of those later innovators was Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling.
Unlike C**t, Gatling was a physician. During the American Civil War, he observed that disease often killed more soldiers than combat itself. He became convinced that if one man could do the work of many soldiers, fewer men would need to be sent into battle.
His solution was the Gatling Gun, the first successful rapid-fire machine gun.
Whether history proved his theory correct is open to debate. What is certain is that his invention transformed warfare and left a lasting mark on military technology.
