For our next Month highlight we have the Code Talkers!

The use of Native Americans and their languages to code secret messages during wartime dates back to the First World War. However, the widespread Code Talkers program was not established until World War II. Native Americans from over twenty different tribes joined the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps code talker programs, with the Marine Corps having the largest of the three. Hundreds of code talkers were deployed in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation during the war and played an invaluable role. The code talkers worked in pairs and used their indigenous languages to translate English messages before transmission, creating codes that were never broken even when messages were intercepted by the enemy. Their work was extraordinary but so secret that they could tell no one anything about it, and the code talker program was not declassified until 1968. Even after it was made public, recognition for these brave men was slow, but in 2001 the members of the WWII code talkers program were finally awarded Congressional Gold Medals for their service and ingenuity.
