This is a cormorant—one of our favorite local residents here at the Drum Bay Nature Preserve! 🦅🌾

​If you see them hanging out on the pilings stretching their wings out like this, they aren't just showing off for the camera. Because cormorants dive deep underwater to hunt for fish, their feathers aren’t completely waterproof. They have to spend time sun-drying their wings in the coastal breeze before their next flight.

​It’s just a little piece of the incredible, untouched wildlife you get to experience every single day when you stay or live at Seahorse Estates. While everyone else is fighting the crowded tourist spots on the main beaches, our low-density community gives you front-row seats to the peaceful stillness of the wetlands.

These recent photos captured near Drum Bay showcase just a few of the birds that make this area so special. Featured here are a majestic Great Blue Heron, elegant Snowy Egrets, and a striking Reddish Egret—each playing an important role in the delicate coastal ecosystem.
