Last week we showed you the first stop on the Carbon Footpath and today we’re back with Stop 2!

The Carbon Footpath is a 10-stop educational walking trail around campus that explores the carbon cycle and why its balance matters for our health and the environment.

Stop 2: Wetlands: Nature’s Water Filter
At the first stop, we explore our commitment to sustainable and environmentally sound farming practices. This includes improving soil health to increase rainfall infiltration and minimize runoff, as well as avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to help protect our wetlands.

By not using liquid manure to fertilize fields bordering the estuary and by leaving a healthy buffer zone of non-grazed fields around wetlands, we manage our nitrogen runoff and protect this fragile estuary ecosystem. Closely observing where wet areas occur on the property and intentionally leaving those areas ungrazed keeps nutrients in our fields and not in our waterways.

The Carbon Footpath is a 10-stop educational walking trail around campus that explores the carbon cycle and why its balance matters for our health and the environment.

As you walk the trail, you’ll discover how we work to build healthy soils and ecosystems, along with the research and partnerships that help us explore more sustainable agricultural practices.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share information about each location. You can also walk the path in person following the designated signs around campus (photo 3).

Stop 1: The Path Forward

At Wolfe’s Neck Center, regenerative agriculture means more than practices that lead to better soil health. We believe that regenerative agriculture encompasses a broad range of outcomes that benefit farmers, animals, ecosystems and communities. As a demonstration, education and research farm, we are uniquely positioned to bring stakeholders from across the regenerative movement together to share information and further knowledge around this ever-evolving and important solution to climate change.
