The Crate House

The Crate House This rustic four bedroom cottage features 180* - unobstructed deep water ocean views of Casco Bay There are views from almost every window

Reminiscent of traditional Maine “camps,” this seasonal rustic cottage is on the shores of Casco Bay, overlooking the islands. The Crate House sleeps 8, has a full kitchen- with stove, fridge and dishwasher, and two full baths (one actually has a bathtub!). It is a perfect place to unwind, get to know your family and friends all over again. Walk down to the rocks and swim in Casco Bay, watch the

seals as they hunt fish, the lobstermen at work, local sailing regattas, or listen to the osprey and bald eagles. Bring games to play in the evenings and good books to read- a great place to unplug (no TV provided, internet provided for a separate fee) and let go of the fast-paced world.

Do you know why The Crate House is named this? Back around 1917, John Calvin Stevens John Howard Stevens Architects were commissioned to design a large estate house for Stanley Wood. This house, now known as the Stone House, incorporated large stones and a number of Italian stone masons, known for their craftsmanship, were brought in just to work on the stone portion of the house.
As there was no camp or dormitory for workers, these stone masons dismantled the crates that the stones had come in and built their housing. Years later, my then 16 year old aunt designed additional rooms, making use of a barn from the mid-1800s, creating what is now The Crate House.
If you look closely you can find where the store masons signed the walls of the original building.

Architecture commission for Stanley Wood at an unknown address in Wolf Neck, Freeport, ME, 1917–1922. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens John Howard Stevens Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection .

Public Service Announcement:
If you are a clammer, or in this case a wormer, PLEASE make sure you not only have permission to cross someone's land, but also have checked in.
This man crossed my land yesterday in Freeport. He crossed right in front of a game camera, during hunting season, when I had active hunters on the property. He's not in blaze orange. Yes, my property is posted.
I realize it is getting harder and harder for these hard working men and women to make a living, but some of us are not out there denying them access, we just want them to meet with us, get permission in writing AND CHECK IN. I would have told him I had people hunting on my property last night and he should take another route to the shore.
I don't want people to get hurt.
Please pass it on.
