Road Conditions on the Cumberland Ranger District – February 14, 2020: If you are considering a trip to your national forest this weekend, there are many options to choose from on the Cumberland Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Despite heavy rains in recent weeks, most recreation access normally open during winter months has not been impacted by the weather.

Around Cave Run Lake – The Lake was at an elevation of 738.6 feet this morning, a level that results in the flooding and closure of some boat ramps and recreation sites, but still allows for access to the Lake. For those looking to put boats on the water, Alfrey’s and Scott’s Creek ramps are the best options given the high waters. At Scott’s Creek, the lower gate is closed and at all open boat ramps, courtesy docks may not be useable. Flood waters should recede over the weekend and make use of these ramps a little easier. Claylick and Bangor gates have been closed due to the high water levels. Warix remains closed for the winter. Longbow, Leatherwood, Blackwater, and Twenty-Six will be very difficult to launch from at these water levels. Boaters should use extra caution, as flood waters result in large amounts of debris in the Lake, which can often be submerged and difficult to spot.

Hiking trails on the north side of the Lake, the "LImestone Loops" are in excelent condition and can be accessed by taking Highway 519 to HIghway 1274, which connects to the north entrance to Forest Road 16 "Lockeegee Road." Lockeegee Road from Highway 801 remains closed due to a landslide.

Red River Gorge – Through cooperation with Powell County and Powell County Tourism, Tunnel Ridge Road remains open this winter and visitors can drive to the end of the road/Auxier Ridge to access hiking trails and take in beautiful vistas. As of this morning, Indian Creek Roads are now open as a result of a partnership between Menifee County and the U.S. Forest Service. Forest Road 9B is closed just past Powdermill Trailhead due to soft and muddy conditions. Efforts in recent years to reconstruct and repair Tunnel Ridge and Indian Creek Roads coupled with County efforts to help maintain the roads through the freeze/thaw cycles is providing the level of maintenance needed to maintain access through the wet winter months. A project scheduled for fall of 2020 will help reconstruct Indian Creek Roads and make them more resilient to flooding and heavy visitor use. While Chimney Top and Rock Bridge Roads remained closed, similar efforts are underway planning projects to reconstruct these roads and make them more resilient to heavy use during wet and freeze/thaw conditions.

If out on the trails this weekend, please remember that recent rains and cold temperatures may make trails very slippery. Watch your step, travel prepared with warm clothing, food, and water. Know before you go; plan your trip and do not embark on your adventure if you do not have a map and have not prepared. And please, pack out all of your trash and show respect for your public land by leaving no trace trace of your travels.

Additional information about recreation on the Cumberland Ranger District can be obtained by visiting the Daniel Boone National Forest website or by calling the Cumberland Ranger District, open Monday – Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM, at 606-784-6428.
