We took a huge leap of faith when we moved to Maine.
Jason left his job in IT, and I traded working on campus for teaching remotelyโall so we could buy a bed and breakfast in a place we had never been, a place where we knew no one; and with a two year old daughter, and an infant son, we dedicated our lives to this dream we hadโworked all hours to keep them safe, build a business they could be proud of.
This was our first season as the owners of the Bird's Nest Bed & Breakfast. It was also our first season managing the ancillary business, Black Wing Kayaks.
At times, it was really hard, but we met the kindest, most interesting people, and in less than a year, we fell in love with a diverse and empathic community, one we never knew existed.
This weekend, when two of our kayaks were not properly pulled above the high tide line and drifted out to sea, we were reminded of this.
It was windy, and the tide was especially high. We asked our friends to be on the lookout, but honestly, we figured they were goneโnot an insignificant thing for us being new business owners, and the parents of two young children, both of whom work extra jobs to make ends meet.
Just when we had given up hope, we got a call telling us that someone had found the two boats, and that they were waiting for us on a dock on Bradford Pt. (SO many thanks to Stevie and Sarah Lash, etc.)
To say we are grateful, is an understatement.
From the moment we arrived, we felt accepted and cared forโa vegetarian dish delivered to our door after returning home from the hospital with our son, meeting people like Pam and her son Eli, who have inspired us, and made us laughโthose who have been there, for no reason, even after knowing us only a few short weeks.

Thank you, Friendship! For the first time, we feel at home.
