It’s Lightning Safety Awareness Week and we've all experienced some amazing lightning displays here on Hatteras Island (Check out Pete Coady's photo from Frisco!)
Here are some tips to keep you safe:
- When thunder roars, go indoors (aka leave the beach!) Lightning is close enough to strike.
- Stay sheltered in a sturdy building or hard-topped vehicle with the windows closed.
- Unplug electronics to protect them from power surges.
- Avoid open areas, tall trees and metal objects like fences or poles if you're caught outside.

Just a reminder... nighttime work continues in our Hatteras ferry channel, so we continue to operate on an alternate schedule with final ferries of the night leaving Hatteras at 8:30 p.m. and leaving Ocracoke at 9 p.m. Please plan accordingly!

⚠️Crystal Coast/Ocracoke/South of Cape Hatteras beachgoers! Based on multiple reports from lifeguards, we now have a HIGH RISK for rip currents from Cape Hatteras south through the Crystal Coast. Stay out of the water, if caught in a rip current, swim parallel to escape.
